Arik air and aero bemoan the closure of osubi airport in delta state.

With daily loss of about N16, 520, 000, two Nigerian major carriers, Arik Air and Aero Contractors have condemned the closure of Osubi Airstrip also known as Warri Airport, in the oil city of Delta State.

The airport was closed on September 3, 2018 when the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) withdrew its navigational services due to debts owed it by the management of the airport, Shoreline Energy International.

In addition to the loss by airlines, the closure has also affected businesses around the airport and also impacted negatively on oil and gas workers who constitute the bulk of the passengers that use the airport.

Akelicious gathered that many of the passengers now use Benin Airport in Edo State, while some travel by road to Delta State.
Head of Communications, Arik Air, Adebanji Ola said yesterday that the airline operates Lagos-Warri flight twice a day and also operates daily flight from Abuja to Warri.

With average fare of N30, 000 per passenger and load factor of 74 passengers per flight with Bombardier Q400 Dash 8 aircraft, the airline said it loses N2, 220, 000 per flight.
Arik also loses a total of N13, 320, 000 daily on three flights to Warri from Lagos and Abuja daily and three flights daily from Warri to Abuja and Lagos respectively.

Spokesman of Arik Air,said that the airline had lost so much due to the closure and described the route as its priced and lucrative route.
“We are losing so much revenue because of the closure. The route is a high yielding route to the airline because we provide premium service to the largely oil and gas workers in Warri and Escravos but now we only provide service to Escravos,” the Arik Air Head of Communication said.

Also the Chief Executive Officer of Aero Contractors, Captain Ado Sanusi, said that Aero operated daily to Warri from Lagos with usually filled Dash 8, Q300 aircraft with capacity of 50-passenger at the cost of N32, 000 per passengers, adding that with the closure of the airport, the company loses N1.6 million on each leg of the flight with a daily loss of N3.2 million.

It was gathered that as at yesterday, September 25, 2018, the airlines had lost N379, 960, 000 since the airport was closed on September 3, 2018The CEO of Aero Contractors Akelicious the airline loses money because of the non-function of the airport, noting that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) should have formally closed the airport after NAMA withdrew its service instead of leaving it technically open.

Spokesman of NCAA, Sam Adurogboye, told Akelicious that NAMA withdrew services to the airport “on the ground that they were not being paid for service rendered. We are aware of their action.” Informed source from NAMA however, told Akelicious that the agency withdrew its Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS) due to debts owed it by Shoreline.

The source said that it was not only the Warri Airport that NAMA withdrew its services, adding that it also did so at the other airports and airstrips indebted to it, which include the airports in Uyo, Akwa Ibom; Bonny-Finima airstrip, Rivers State; Dutse, Jigawa State; Birnin-Kebbi, Kebbi State, Bauchi in Bauchi State and Gombe in Gombe State.
Informed NAMA source said only Warri airport was closed because “the management of the other airports came up with their payment plans and reached agreement with the agency.”

Akelicious also learnt that Warri airport is one of the busiest airports in Nigeria although passenger traffic to the airports slumped in the last six years due to decline in oil and gas activities of some major oil companies around the Warri area.
For example, according to available records, in 2010 the airport recorded a total number of 343,333 passengers; 365,875 in 2011; 355, 661 in 2012; 328, 463 in 2013; 221, 250 in 2014 and 187, 630 in 2015.

Shell Petroleum Develop-ment Company (SPDC) owned the Osubi airstrip and sold it to Shoreline, an indigenous oil and gas concern in April, 2015.

Robbers Break Into Lagos Canteen, Cart Away Pots Of Soup.

It sounded like a fairytale but on Tuesday morning at Adejonwo close, off Jonathan Coker road, Fagba area of Lagos State, the reality of the hard times became real when some persons before dawn broke into a canteen, Testimony Kitchen, and carted away coolers of soup, meat rice and beans.

The owner of the canteen had prepared the soup and some food overnight for early callers the following day. To her shock, she resumed on Tuesday morning and discovered her shop was burgled. She was so downcast and disoriented. Her customers, many who came to get food for their kids set for school, were also astonished.

Narrating the incident to The Guardian, a neighbour, Mrs. Ayodele Adebayo, said: “I have witnessed four similar incidents in the past few weeks. People are hungry and what they have resorted to is breaking into people’s shop to steal foodstuff, soup and meat. If you catch them they will explain to you that they are hungry and have no other option. The family who stole my co-tenant’s food was even asking whether they could still get more to eat. It is that bad. People are really hungry. Recession has only ended on the pages of newspapers.”

Adegor Okpako, Soldier, Commits Suicide In Borno

Another Nigerian Army soldier has committed suicide in Borno State.

Adegor Okpako, a staff sergeant attached to 192 Battalion in Gwoza, killed himself at about 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, PREMIUM TIMES learnt from military sources.

Mr Okpako also killed another sergeant colleague who was only identified as Saka.

Three soldiers and a member of the civilian joint task force were also seriously wounded in the random shooting by Mr Okpako, sources said.

Mr Okpako killed himself two days after returning to the battalion after taking a few days’ break. It was not immediately clear whether he was receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder or any form of mental health crisis.

The spokespersons for the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Army and the counter-terrorism unit were all unavailable for comments late Wednesday.

But the Army tweeted shortly before 12 a.m. Thursday that the incident was a case of accidental discharge on Wednesday afternoon.

“Accidental discharge kills 2 soldiers. We deeply regret to announce the death of two soldiers of 192 Battalion who lost their lives as a result of an accidental discharge during in-theatre training today,” the Army said.

The statement said a thorough inquiry would be conducted to understand the source of the fatal attack.

Our sources however insisted that it was a suicide case as no training was going on when the incident occurred, contrary to the claim by the Army.

The plight of Nigerian soldiers engaging Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria’s war-ravaged northeast appears to have worsened in recent months. Over 100 soldiers have been killed and as many feared missing since mid-July alone.

The frequency and scope of the latest Boko Haram assault have alarmed security analysts and residents in the region who feared the insurgents might have regrouped.

Several military bases have been raided in recent weeks, with terrorists making away with large quantities of military equipment in virtually every raid.

Experts also blame inadequate weapons and welfare for the troops for the losses being inflicted by the terrorists.

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, had paid unscheduled visits to the war front at least two times within the past six weeks.

Mr Buratai’s visits often focus on promising a better working condition and abundant supply or arms and ammunition in a bid to boost the morale of the troops. But it appeared that not every soldier was optimistic about the promises, a situation that may have contributed to the increasing number of mental health cases.

In November 2017, a soldier opened fire on a captain, killing him before turning the gun on himself.

The latest suicide comes three months after an Army captain committed suicide while under psychiatric evaluation in Borno State.

When y'all saw me on BET going off on Torae I was high off lean. My attitude, everything changed. My fans started to turn on me, my family too."

"I never promoted lean in my songs," he continued.

"The whole time I was on the UCP tour with Chris [Brown] I WAS SIPPING 4’s at least 7 times a day. I was addicted until our show in Cincinnati... I came off stage and passed out, woke up in the hospital [and] was having withdrawals."

Bow Wow admits that he was drinking cough syrup to "be cool."

Southern and middle belt leader's berate president buhari for the appointment of magaji as new DSS boss.

Southern and Middle Belt Leaders, on Thursday rejected the appointment of Yusuf Magaji Bichi, as the new Director-General of the Department of Security Service, DSS by President Muhammadu Buhari.

    Buhari

    Mathew seiyefa

    Yusuf  magaji.

The group in a statement jointly signed by its leaders, Chief E.K Clark (South South) Chief Ayo Adebanjo (South West), Chief John Nwodo (South East) and Dr. Bitrus Pogu (Middle Belt), rejected the appointment of Magaji, saying the new DSS DG does not come near removed Acting DG, Matthew Seiyefa in terms of experience and qualifications.

The statement reads, “The outright disregard for the conditions precedent for a united Nigeria and an inclusive country which President Buhari has become well known for was taken to a new height this evening with the removal of the Acting DG of DSS, Mr. Matthew Seiyefa and replacement with Mr. Yusuf Magaji Bichi from Kano”.

“The I-don’t-care and in-your-face attitude of the President in restoring Nigeria security architecture to the provocative situation of having 16 out of 17 service chiefs from his corner of the country is a clear demonstration of the fact that Nigeria for General Muhammadu Buhari is no more than his section of Nigeria and the resources and the constitutionally mandatory votes from other sections of the country”.

“Since 1960, Nigeria has never had a leader more sectional, narrow, parochial ,and tribalistic like the current President who went on a global stage to divide Nigeria into “97 % and 5%”.

“We have looked critically at the profiles of the Acting DG, who was removed and the one Buhari just appointed and it is crystal clear that Bichi does not come with any experience close to that of Seiyefa.

“The only qualification for this appointment is therefore only the rabid nepotism of the President which has seen him always masking personal and sectional interest as “national interest.

“Besides, Bichi is an out-of-the -system man drafted by Mr Lawan Daura in the days of his nepotism rule at the DSS. The next six most senior persons in line of succession at the DSS after Seiyefa are from our findings are all southerners which may explain why the President picked a man who already retired from the DSS to lead because of ethnic affinity

“That the President went ahead to deep himself further into the cocoon of ethnic irredentism in making this insensitive appointment shows clearly that he does not care a hoot about the unity, cohesion and oneness of Nigeria

“We reject this appointment and we do not shy in telling Mr. President that he no longer pretends that the country is one under him.

“In the last few days, there have been fears coming from the international community about the dangers that would come the way of Nigeria if Mr. President returns for another term. With his latest action, we add that the country is not safe in the remainder of his first term.

“Lastly we ask, Mr President, Are we still one county?”

Twenty Years Old Naomi Osaka has won the US Open after an angry Serena Williams accused the umpire of being a "thief" in some of the most dramatic scenes at a Grand Slam final.

Williams was given a game penalty for her outburst, which followed racquet smashing and another code violation as Osaka won 6-2 6-4 in New York.

Osaka, 20,is the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam.

Williams refused to shake hands with umpire Carlos Ramos after the match.

The American, 36, graciously congratulated Osaka at the net after the 20th seed completed an extraordinary victory and, although Williams' behaviour will grab the attention, nothing should detract from a classy and composed display from Osaka at Flushing Meadows.

1.Election fever has gripped our country and many want to be President. Some are serious contenders whilst others are not.Yet the truth is that our problems cannot be solved simply by a Pres. election. It is a good start but it is not a cure all.We need to do far more than...1/2

Femi Fani-Kayode

@realFFK
 2. ..just electing a new President if we want lasting peace, if we want to flourish as a people and if we want to grow as a nation. Anyone that believes that removing Buhari alone will solve all our problems is naive and shortsighted.  We need to go much further than that...2/3

 3. ...The reality is that the problems of Nigeria can only be solved by having a  credible and all-encompassing referendum and ensuring that our so-called federation is properly and thoroughly restructured. Anything short of that means we are simply postponing the evil day...3/4

Femi Fani-Kayode
