Senate asks banks to allow up to N40,000 per withdrawal from their ATMs and asks CBN to suspend card maintenance fee

The Senate has passed a resolution calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria to suspend the ATM card maintenance charges being deducted from customers' accounts per month. They also called on commercial banks to configure their machines to dispense up to N40,000 per withdrawal.

The Senate made this known via a tweet @SPNigeria. This resolution came as part of a motion on the illicit and excessive bank charges on customers accounts, sponsored by Senator Olugbenga Ashafa, representing Lagos East.

Speaking on the Motion, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki said:

This is a motion that affects the lives of every Nigerian — irrespective of what part of the country you come from or whatever political affiliation you might have. This is why we are here: to always defend and protect the interests of the Nigerian people.

The Senate President said the Senate must work to ensure that the Senate’s resolutions on the excessive bank charges go beyond the debate stage and actually takes effect.

He said:

This Senate has done this many times before; when there was a hike in the mobile telecommunication data charges, we intervened and put an end to that. When there were discrepancies and increases in electricity prices, we also took action. We have done this on a number of similar cases. Therefore, on this, I want us to take effective resolutions.
The Senate further directed its Committees on Banking, Insurance & other Financial Institutions and Finance to conduct an investigation into the propriety of ATM card maintenance charges in comparison with international best practices and report back to the Senate.

Niger Republic Dumps Nigeria, Opts For Ghana, Cotonou Ports.

The Shippers Council of Niger has jettisoned a Memorandum of Understanding it entered into with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to ship transit cargo through Nigeria.

The country has instead decided to ship its cargoes through the ports of Cotonou and Ghana.

The Executive Secretary, NSC, Mr Hassan Bello, confirmed this.

He spoke in Lagos on Friday at a seminar organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Freight Forwarders Group.

He said the operators from Niger Republic found it easier moving their cargoes through Ghana and Cotonou ports than Nigeria’s.

Bello, who spoke through the Assistant Director, Enforcement and Compliance, Public Service Department, NSC, Mr Akujobi Chukwuemeka, listed time wasting, insecurity and poor customer service among the reasons why the operators refused to honour the agreement with the Nigerian agency.

He said, “If it will take them two days to clear their consignment in Cotonou while it takes them two weeks to do that in Nigeria, they will choose Cotonou.

“So they abandoned that agreement we had with them. If you go to Shippers Council, you will still see them there but they are not doing anything. “

Bello decried the poor customer service delivery in the seaports, noting that it was one of the major causes of inefficiency and the reason why most importers preferred to clear their cargoes through ports of neighbouring countries.

He blamed this on lack of automation of processes, time wasting in positioning containers and processing documents, lackluster and poor attitude of operators and government agencies to work and towards customers.

He said, “Do the ports provide good service and in a reliable manner? Is the service consistent? What of the safety of the cargoes, security of the shipment and the issues connected to documentation? How long does it take for documentation processes to be finalised in respect of clearance of cargo?

“So when we talk of customer service, these are small ingredients that will make a customer  rate  the port as  an efficient one. When all these things are not there, you cannot be talking about customer service.”

He said, effective customer relations meant that the agencies would interact in a friendly manner with customers, thus making it easy for people to obtain information while making enquiries from Customs, terminal operators and other government agencies.

In other ports, it would take a few hours to discharge oversized cargo, while in Nigeria, it would take days because the operators lacked the equipment and the customer would wait for days for them to hire equipment to operate such cargo, the NSC executive director  pointed out.

According to him,  the port charges in Nigeria are also on the high side compared to other ports.

In terms of infrastructure, most of the ports had no hinterland connection, he said, adding that it was only in Nigeria that seaports were built without rail connection, leading to gridlock.

'No president In the world can be as Irresponsible as the Nigerian president' - Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah has said that there is a very high tendency for any Nigerian President to be irresponsible due to the extent of power he wields.

He stated this in his address during the annual lecture at the Ulefunta/Oyemekun festival in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Friday.  According to Kukah, no President in the world could boast of the kind of power available to the Nigerian President.

In his words: “No President in the world has the kind of power the Nigerian president has and as such, no President in the world can be as irresponsible as the Nigerian President. His power is so much that he can give oil bloc to his girlfriend and many others.

You thus can’t be a man of honour and live in a country like Nigeria and not be angry. What is the problem? It is the dilemma of leadership. In America, there are basic expectations of what a President should be. For instance, he must have gone through Harvard as an institution, he must have language and track record, not even wealth.

You can’t surprise the system. Here in Nigeria, a local government Chairman wants to be Governor; the Governor wants to be President and the President doesn’t want to go! Many states have two governors representing them at the National Assembly.

Governors have control and monopoly of resources of state and they use same resources to oppress them.”

The bishop also lamented the lack of loyalty on the part of citizens, saying: “In Nigeria, it is not a question of looking for trouble because trouble is already here. The Nigerian state has no capacity to protect itself and there is no loyalty to Nigeria from its citizens but to those who help individuals to get to positions in the system."

He, however, cited two leaders he thinks are models for good leadership.  He said: “Awolowo, for his major quintessential evidence as somebody who already figured out what he would do with power if he got it. He understood the building blocks for an egalitarian society. Aminu Kano single-handedly took on the feudal class in northern society and had a deep understanding of society, even as he textually talked about a free society in a way and manner that didn’t offend religion".

“We have to understand the building blocks of society which is not too different from the rules of building a house. A good society is not different from the building blocks of society. When a building collapses, it didn’t collapse in a day. It began to collapse a long time ago. For us to build a good society, we have to have eyes that monitor the needs, growth and development and feelings of that society. Then you can be sure of the quality of that society."

Police clash with member's of the people's Democratic party during peaceful protest in abuja.

The protesters, which included presidential aspirants Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki; Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; and Senator Datti Baba Ahmed had left the INEC Headquarters, and were approaching the Police headquarters on a peaceful protest where they were met with police barricades and live ammunition.

Senator Dino Melaye, the Chairman of the PDPs Committee to protest the Osun State gubernatorial elections, was also physically assaulted by some police officers.

Frankly speaking ehn, serious emphasis ought to be placed on INEC and the nigerian police with regards to the upcoming 2019 election's,they need to be re-oriented on the doctrine of fairness.
